On a possible scenario of development of aftershock process after the earthquake on 11 March 2011 in Japan

Abstract

Significant analogy in aftershocks dynamics of the Great Earthquake of Japan on 11 March 2011 with aftershock sequences of the Sumatra-Andaman (2004, Mw = 9,3) and Simushir earthquakes (2006, Mw = 8,3) was discussed. A similarity in time for the first event and in space (a field of aftershocks' epicenter) for the second was noted. A possibility of a strong recurring thrust with magnitude about 8, shifted along the main thrust towards the deep-water trench was also suggested.
