Ancient subduction zone in the Sea of Okhotsk

L. P. Zabarinskaya, N. A. Sergeyeva

Abstract

The article deals with the northwestern part of the Sea of Okhotsk, which includes the northern part of Sakhalin Island and the Deryugin Basin. This region is an area of recent intensive tectonic movements. A geodynamic model of the deep structure of the lithosphere for this region was constructed on geological and geophysical data. The model confirmed that there is an ophiolite complex in the region under consideration that separates the North Sakhalin sedimentary basin from the Deryugin Basin. The Deryugin Basin was formed on the side of an ancient deep trench after subducting the Sea Okhotsk plate under Sakhalin in the Late Cretaceous-Paleogene. The ophiolite complex fixes position of ancient subduction zone which was active in the Late Cretaceous-Paleogene. The remains of subduction zone in the form of an ophiolite complex were revealed by geological and geophysical data.
