The history of the research of the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2011

Abstract

The paper studies the history of the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GC RAS) research. GC RAS was formed in August 1954 as the Interdepartmental Geophysical Committee (IGC) of the USSR on the preparation and holding of the International Geophysical Year at 1957-1958. It was the largest international scientific event of the XX century, in which 67 countries and about 30,000 scientists from all over the world took part. In January 1961 the IGC was transformed into in compliance with a decision of the USSR Council of Ministers. In June 1992 the IGC was reorganized into the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Since the foundation of the GC RAS its structure, tasks and research were changing along with the development of Soviet, and then Russian science.

The work gives an outlook the review of the main achievements of scientific, publishing and international activities of the GC RAS in 2011. This article focuses on the analysis of the most important results of the fundamental scientific research within the framework of scientific programs of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Department of Earth Sciences.
